In the “Bu Gençlikte İŞ Var!” Best Business Ideas Competition operated by TÜSİAD with the aim of encouraging young entrepreneurs, students Beliz Bediz from METU Bioinformatics Department and Yunus Can Esmeroğlu from METU Biology Department have placed first with their project “Heavy Metal Sweepers”.
Under the guidance of Limak Holding Inc. board member Ebru Özdemir, the team from METU, with the idea of “Indefinite Neutralization of Toxic Heavy Metals via Confinement by Endospore-forming Bacteria”, has obtained the first place among 154 new business ideas from 48 universities. Besides the money award, the team was also awarded with a virtual office for developing the plan further, an e-trading internet service, accounting and financial consulting and judicial consulting.

Initiated at the beginning of November 2012, following the earthquake in Van, by Eymir Culture Foundation, “METU at Van” campaign has achieved its initial goals thanks to intense support received. Having its foundations built in December 29th, 2011, The Learning Unit with a capacity of 500 in a 2 story setting, was made available to the Yüzüncü Yıl University students with a glorious opening ceremony in March 24th, 2012.
Following the resumption of education in Yüzüncü Yıl University, a Female Dormitory with a capacity of 192 in 2 stories will be opened in November 9th,2012 at 13:30 with a formal opening ceremony. The construction of dormitory was finalized at August, 2012.

English Times Higher Education (THE) has announced the results of "World University Rankings Top 400 2012-2013" on October 3rd, 2012. Five Turkish universities are included in the list which ranks California Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Oxford University as first, second and third.
No Turkish universities were placed in the first 200 this year. While the first 200 universities were ranked ordered by their scores, the ones after 200were grouped and listed alphabetically within their groups. METU was placed in the 201-225, Bilkent University and Koç University were placed in the 226-250 and Boğaziçi University and İTÜ were placed in the 276-300 groups.
The criteria used in THE rankings are "Research (budget and reputation)", "Impact of Research (citations)", "Teaching and learning environment", "Income from the industry" and "International dimension". The overall ranking score is determined by taking the weighted mean of the scoresof these criteria. With respect to the overall score achieved, METU ranked 203rd, Bilkent University ranked 238th, Koç University ranked 242nd, Boğaziçi University ranked 276th and İTÜ ranked 290th in the world.
Amongst the five Turkish universities, METU, achieved the highest scores in "Research (budget and volume)" and "Teaching: the learning environment" criteria, Koç University, in "Impact of research" and "International dimension" criteria, and İTÜ, in "Industry income: innovation" criteria. The data about "Research", "Teaching and learning environment" and "Impact of research" criteria are mostly collected from THE general databases and surveys while "Income from the industry" and "International dimension" criteria depend mostly on universities' declarations. According to the assesment announced by "World Design Rankings", Turkey ranked second only behind USA among 140 nations by the number of international "A' Design Award"s received during 2010-2012.
Amongst the designers that helped Turkey rank second, with 22 awards received, Designnobis team placed first under the leadership of METU Industrial Design Department Instructor Dr. Hakan Gürsu. Designnobis team owns 22 of the total 40 "A' Design Awards" received by Turkey this year.
We congratulate Dr. Hakan Gürsu and his team for their achievements and wish them continued success.

"Cybermetrics Lab", which is a research group that belongs to Spanish research body "Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC)", has announced the July 2012 edition of "Webometrics Ranking of World Universities" at the end of July 2012. Among approximately 20.000 world universities that were evaluated and ranked, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Stanford University ranked the top three universities of the world.
In this ranking, Middle East Technical University has ranked 275th and maintained its first position amongst the Turkish universities. By ascending to 275th place at July 2012, METU, which formerly ranked 342nd at the preceding January 2012 edition of the Webometrics Ranking, achieved great success.
According to the ranking in July 2012, in addition to Middle East Technical University, İstanbul Technical University (ITU) from Turkey has also been included in the top 500 universities list, by taking the 499th place in the ranking.
Amongst the Turkish universities between the first 500 and 1000, Gazi University ranked 501st, Ankara University ranked 548th, Ege University ranked 562nd, Bilkent University ranked 611st, Boğaziçi University ranked 663rd, Hacettepe University ranked 677th, Anadolu University ranked 738th, İstanbul University ranked 839th, İnönü University ranked 865th, Sabancı University ranked 928th, Çukurova University ranked 966th, and 9 Eylül University ranked 994th. The aim of Webometrics Ranking is to increase the web based journal output of universities and to encourage them to use the web efficiently. Therefore, rather than assessing the academic success of universities, the interest of potential students in universities and the quality of journals written by the scholars, Webometrics focuses on universities’ publicity on the web and efficiency of their web use.

METU is the only Turkish university which is included among the “Highest Group” in the international university rankings by Times Higher Education, QS, Webometrics, HEEACT, URAP and Leiden.
Leading in the International Projects
One third of all the European Union Projects with Turkish participation are run under METU's coordination. The total budget of 91 EU projects run under METU coordination amounts to 284 million Euro.
A Large Spectrum of International Students
As a reflection of international recognition, more than 1800 students from 80 countries all over the world are getting their higher education in METU. Each year, approximately 1000 new international students prefer to study at METU.
International Joint Programs
The international education opportunities offered by METU include 4 joint programs with universities in the US for the undergraduate students as well as 18 different joint programs for the graduate students in collaboration with the universities in the US and EU.
International Graduate Programs
More than 190 protocols are signed within the framework of Erasmus and Erasmus-Mundus programs.
International Accreditation
International accreditation is one of the most important indicators of educational quality. In connection with this, METU was the first to get the ABET certificate in 1994 for all of the engineering departments. This achievement has also been certified by ABET 2000 and ABET 2010.
