We will hold the 19th session of our “Learn & Connect: 5.40 Lecture Series” on Thursday, May 14, 2026. In this session, one of our faculty members from the Department of Chemistry, Assoc. Prof. Salih Özçubukçu will be with us with his presentation titled “Breaking the Lab: From Screen to Science-The Tale of Molecules.”
At the “Learn” part of the session, through the lens of an organic chemist, the evolution of molecules “borrowed” from nature into the complex systems and everyday objects of the modern world will be examined. Furthermore, it will be emphasized how science finds its place not only within the confines of a laboratory but also in fictional narratives, on the silver screen, and within our collective memory. Following, the seminar will address the environmental and biological risks that accompany the immense power offered by chemistry. While discussing the thin line between fiction and scientific reality through familiar “dangerous” scenarios from popular culture, the focus will be placed on how rational solutions are engineered within both academic and industrial spheres.
Following the seminar, we will gather for a “Connect” session in the main foyer area of our Culture and Convention Center.
