We will hold the 22nd session of our “Learn & Connect: 5.40 Lecture Series” event on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at 4.40 pm. In this session, Prof. Sinan Kalkan from the Department of Computer Engineering will join us with his presentation titled “Artificial Intelligence and the Wizard of Oz.”
Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is perceived from the outside as a colossal, magical entity, much like the Wizard of Oz, all-knowing and powerful enough to eliminate jobs. But what lies behind the curtain? In this seminar, using the Wizard of Oz metaphor, we will discuss the fundamental methods and limitations underlying the illusions of AI. By examining current research topics aimed at developing fair and reliable AI systems, we will see that technology is not perfect or magic, but a tool that needs to be controlled and guided. We will claim that, in the future, jobs will not disappear; on the contrary, there will be a greater need than ever for young minds to manage the gears behind the curtain and build fair and responsible systems that serve humanity.
Following the seminar, we will gather for a “Connect” session in the main foyer area of our Culture and Convention Center.
