Conservation efforts

I have been involved in conservation for a long time. Starting from late 1970s, I worked for TTKD and DHKD, written several popular articles, and was the ICBP (now Birdlife) representative and a board member of DHKD for a while. My first important conservation project was on the Sultan Marshes (Sultansazlığı) in Central Turkey. Together with Reşit Akçakaya, we had successfully run a WWF sponsored project during 1981-1983. I also took part in various educational projects involving monk seals, bald ibis, and the environment in general during the eighties.

More recently, I have founded the Turkish Bird Research Society (KAD) in January 1998, and since then my colleagues and I have carried out several conservation projects. These include Bird Strike Risk Assesment over Selected Wetlands (funded by Ministry of Environment) and Conservation of Cinerous Vulture in Kızılcahamam (supported by GEF-SGP).

I am also currently advising Batı Akdeniz Ormancılık Araştırma Enstitüsü (Forestry Research Institute, Antalya) on the study and conservation of the only autochtonous population of fallow deer (Dama dama) in the world.
