Aykan Erdemir

 

 

erdemir.jpgAykan Erdemir, who holds a PhD in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University (2004), is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and the Deputy Dean of the Graduate School of Social Sciences at Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey. Erdemir is the director of the German-Turkish Masters Program in Social Sciences (GeT MA), a dual-diploma program of Humboldt-Universität and METU, and a fellow of Germany Meets Turkey (GMT), an interdisciplinary network for young leaders and future innovators from Germany and Turkey. He also teaches in the graduate programs in Social Anthropology and Middle East Studies. Erdemir's courses cover social and political anthropology, ethnographic field research, and the anthropology of Europe and the Middle East.

 

 

Erdemir's academic research and writing is mainly focused on:

 

1)    Faith-based collective action of Turkish and European Alevis & secularism

2)    Work and remittance strategies and networks of Turkish immigrants (case studies: London and New York)

3)    Competitive sharing and museumification of religious sites in Turkey,

4)    Internationalization of social sciences and humanities.

 

Erdemir has been involved in research projects funded by the Wenner Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, National Science Foundation (NSF), European Union Framework Programs (6th and 7th), European Commission-EIHDR, European Center for Minority Issues (ECMI), the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), Harvard University, and METU.

 

Erdemir serves on the editorial/advisory boards of Migration Letters, Journal of Sociological Research, Eurasian Journal of Anthropology,Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies, Toplum ve Demokrasi, Alevi Bektaşi Research Website, and Abant İzzet Baysal Üniversitesi İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi Ekonomik ve Sosyal Araştırmalar Dergisi. He serves on the executive board of Sociological Association of Turkey, scientific board of the Alevi Institute (AL-EN), and the advisory board of the Garip Dede Türbesi Koruma Onarma ve Yaşatma Derneği. As an outspoken critic of discrimination against non-Sunnis in Turkey, he appears frequently on TV and radio, and in print media to advocate for secular democracy and religious freedoms in Turkey.
